While we’re busy growing up, they are growing old.

Grandparents. They’re the quiet yet amused voice that says yes when our parents say no. They never forget a birthday, even if sometimes, they forget how to spell your name. And for some unfathomable reason, the meals they cook are always the best. Win or lose, they always have a warm smile and comforting hug waiting just for us. Their presence keeps us grounded, because they represent our roots. They remind us of home.



There are plenty of memorable days with my grandparents but only few are captured by the camera loaded with film. Developing films are costly during my time that's why today's kids are lucky that they can instantly have a picture with their Lolos and Lolas.

One memorable day with one of my Lolas, Lola Lading, was during my 7th birthday. That was the time that I was living with them in the province. It's my first year in elementary school and I'm away from my parents. As we all know life in the province is not as well as in Manila but my grandparents still celebrated my birthday and performed the “Tubong or pagtutubong” which is a tradition in Marinduque for a person on his or her special day or ocassion. The person is seated while the nagtutubong dances and throws money at you, making you feel important. I got a vivid memory of my grandparents especially my Lola dancing in front of me, smiling and making me feel secured and well loved by them.

I spent few times with my grandparents but most of them are memorable ones, not just a memory recalled but the vivid memories.

Specifically on September 7, The SM Store will give senior citizens a 10% discount for a minimum P1,000 single-receipt purchase of any regular-priced item, as long as they present their senior citizen card with their SM Advantage Card. There’s a priority checkout lane to make shopping easier for seniors as well!
